Description

Jeffrey Berns, MD, from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, discusses IV iron and serum ferritin levels after chairing a session on iron management at the 2008 ASN in this video blog. IV iron is toxic to the tissues in experimental animals. Studies on serum ferritin levels raised questions as to whether there is efficacy of setting values for serum ferritin levels. One of the iron dextrans is so unsafe it should probably be removed from the market. Is there really a serum ferritin level that would prohibit the additional use of IV iron ?
