About the video:
From Oxford - Researchers have tested the safety and benefit of Flurizan, a compound that blocks the production of beta-amyloid, a molecule that is found in the plaques of patients with Alzheimer's. In a randomized clinical trial involving over 200 patients, those who received Flurizan had nearly a 50% reduction in rate of decline in Activities of Daily Living. However, the medicine failed to meet the primary outcome of a reduction in cognitive decline.
From California - Attending daycare may raise the risk of many infections, but may lower the risk of developing leukemia. In a meta-analysis of 14 studies which compared over 6,000 children with childhood leukemia to over 13,000 without, those who attended daycare had a 30% lower chance of having this rare blood cancer. The study suggests that development of the immune system may play a role in the development of leukemia.
And finally, from Argentina - An evidence-based knowledge translation program has been shown to significantly improve the safety of the final stages of labor. A randomized clinical trial, in which healthcare workers received regular educational updates, has shown a reduction in episiotomies, a greater likelihood of using oxytocin and a 70% reduction is severe bleeding during delivery.
